You can't stop the music!

No, this post is not about the Village People's movie... oh that was bad.....  This post is all about my latest finish for Quilts 4 Kids.

The design that I picked to stitch this time is actually called "Cheerful Notes" and in the end it has turned out to be a cheerful little quilt square. 

Kaitlyn M's theme is "Music and Dance" and when I saw this design I thought it was the perfect one for her.  I hope that Kaitlyn will like it when it is finally added to her quilt.

The stitching took me slightly longer to do than I had planned due to little old me succumbing to the dreaded lurgy and not feeling like stitching for a couple of weeks.  But that is hopefully all long gone now and stitching mode is back in full swing!

Now that I have finished my last Quilts 4 Kids quilt square for the time being what I am going to do next....



Well, I have 3 November birthday cards to stitch for the Craftbubble "Crazy for Kitties" birthday exchange and also I have signed up to do the Margaret Sherry Bloggers SAL #2 also due in November; I also have to finish SAL #1 (hanging my head in shame...) and finally the "Crazy for Kitties" group are possibly going to be doing another Christmas exchange which I will be joining again if it goes ahead.  So I have lots of nice little bits and pieces to keep me amused for the next couple of months.

My current stitching is the first of the birthday cards.  I found these cute little black and white kittens in "Cross Stitch Collection" Issue 198.  There are four designs to stitch and it was a hard choice, but in the end I have chosen the one sitting with the watering can.  I may do another one as well.... who knows!

Monday's Stitching Update

Hello fellow bloggers....  I hope that this post finds you all safe and sound around the world.  Over the last few weeks there has been so much going on with hurricanes and earthquakes it makes you wonder what is happening to our lovely planet.

Today I am at home with a revolting sore throat and headache... but I am not getting a cold or the flu... ok, bugs you heard that so go away!  So far this winter I have managed to avoid all the dreaded flu bugs that have been going around and I do not intend to succumb now!!

The bonus of being home today though is that I am managing to finally catch up on my blog reading....  I can't believe how busy all these very clever crafty people have been since I last went wandering in blogland.  I really must go for a wander more often!  I apologise to everyone for my lack of wandering, but unfortunately the hours in the day just don't seem long enough to do everything I want to do.... Reading some of the posts on the blogs that I follow it seems to me that most of us are in the same situation.

I do have a small stitching update for you.  Over the last couple of weeks I have been slowly (and I mean slowly!) stitching on the latest quilt square for "Quilts 4 Kids".  This square is a "Gloria and Pat" design called "Cheerful Notes".  It is a really nice design to stitch now that I have got the hang of all the quarter stitches in it!  At first I was doing half stitches, but when I looked at the coloured print of the design I realised that they would be better off being quarter stitches as they are supposed to represent lines or strings on the instruments. 

Below is where I was up to as of last night.  I am planning on getting a few hours in stitchng this afternoon so will give you all another update soon.

My four monkeys are at the end of the last row.  The monkey squares are fabulous - I love how everyone has a different type of monkey.  Makes for a very special quilt for a very special little boy.

If you go to the Quilts 4 Kids website you will see Wyatt with his completed quilt.  Seeing Wyatt with his finished quilt makes me feel really proud of what I stitched.

Angels and Cats!

Well, firstly sincere apologies for not being around much the past month or so.... don't know where time is going to.  I can't believe that it is over 2 weeks since my last post!  I have been very busy at work lately, and have been doing my stitching every night.  Also things have been quite busy at home over the past few weeks as well.... so it's no wonder that I haven't had much time to get on the computer!  The poor old computer sits in the corner of the study wondering what has happened to me - I think it will soon leave home if I don't start it up more regularly!!!

So if I haven't been online, then what have I been doing??

I finished the last bit of backstitch on my playful puppy and started the Precious Moments angel for the final Quilts 4 Kids square that I had signed up for.  The angel is now finished and was sent off the other day.  The quilt square was for Tatum R, and her theme was Angels and Butterflies.  This design was so easy to stitch and I really enjoyed it.  It was lovely watching the angelic face appear.  It was a free design from the Gloria and Pat website and is called "Light the Way".  I just love the Precious Moments designs.  Hopefully I will have the opportunity to stitch some more of these cute angelic designs one day.  The backstitch on this design was so easy - the designers actually tell you in what order to stitch the backstitch and where certain areas start and finish (ie around the sleeves and hands) so there is no trying to interpret for yourself.... makes backstitch a joy to do!!!

 So for now I will be taking a break from the quilt squares as I have to finish off a couple of other things - mainly my Margaret Sherry Culinary Cats!  I am currently finishing off a little MS cat that I started ages ago - just to prepare myself for the Culinary Cats onslaught that will start on the weekend!

I also quickly made up a birthday card to send to the UK as part of the Craftbubble "Crazy for Kitties" birthday exchange.  I had previously stitched the "Kiri kitten" so I just had to pull it all together as a card.  I spent a lovely Friday morning doing the card while the weather was trying to blow the backyard away.  I recently bought the "Ultimate Crafter's Companion Pro" so I used that to fold and score my cardstock.  I also watched the instructional DVD to see what else you can do with it.  I don't make a lot of cards but it does help to have the Ultimate Pro to do some of the different folds.  Not sure how creative I will be with it but you never know!

On the home front, we have recently had our patio (pergola) pulled down and replaced with a lovely new gabled one and had the paving relaid to suit the new patio area.  The next step is to get the cats area reinstalled so that they can go outside again.  They have been very good boys over the last month while they have been house-bound.  But I think that on the 4th June they will be very happy kitties!  The area that they will have is going to be larger and will allow us the space to sit in the screened off area with them and Daisy Dog.  The boys have been quite excited since the new structure has been up as now we have 2 little Willie Wag-tail birds coming in under the patio for a visit.  They have always visited the back yard but usually hang around by the vegie patch.  Although, once the cat's screen goes back up they might not want to come so close to the house.... I'm sure that Felix and Oscar would be very happy to welcome them in though....  It is so funny watching Oscar and Felix when the birds come close to the house - they make these funny meow noises and their whole bodies quiver...  don't think they would know what to do though if they were confronted with a bird!  And fingers crossed it stays that way - that is one of the reasons they have a safe outdoor area to play in - birds and cats are both safe then!!!

Totally Useless SAL update - New Moon 3 May 2011

Well, well, well.... here we are again!  Another new month and another new moon! 

This month sees my little ORT's jar full of some lovely colours from all the quilt squares that I have stitched.  I have had to squish them down a bit this month so now I am developing quite a tight little mound of ORT's in this jar.  Next year I think I will start with a bigger jar!

This month's photo has been taken next to a very surprised flower fairy (angel) sitting in the cat's basket....  I took a couple of photos of the ORT's and the fairy in different locations around the house but decided to use this photo as it came out the best!

So what has contributed to the ORT's this month: well there was all the browns from the monkeys, then the whale with all it's grey threads, and now finally the puppy with his pretty colours.

While I was looking for TUSAL photo locations I was joined by superstar Felix!  Or should I say "Australia's Next Top Cat"!  Felix decided to lay across the end of the table watching me find the perfect spot so I decided that maybe he would like his photo taken with the ORT's - it seems that he did.  No sooner had I put the jar next to him he started to move it to the perfect position and then lay there with his paw on it - as you can see by the photo below!  So this month I have two TUSAL photos!

I'm late, I'm late for a very important date - Stitching Update

Now for a quick stitching update on the puppy quilt square that I am trying to finish off... I know it's late!  But it is almost done - last bit of backstitch tonight and it will be in the mail tomorrow - unwashed this time though.  Never mind that's what happens when you get sick and don't feel well enough to stitch for any length of time!

Happy Easter!

I hope that everyone is having a safe and happy Easter.  We are having a very quiet break and making the most of the time off work to catch up on some gardening and some crafting.  I am still in recovery mode after having had a very nasty bout of Gastro for over week...  finally on the mend!  Just in time to eat chocolate!!!  Although chocolate and diets don't mix very well!

While I was off work sick for the week I did manage to get some stitching done - but not as much as I would have liked.  The first few days weren't very nice and most of the time I just wanted to lie around and sleep...  I didn't even spend any time on the computer so I am very, very behind in my blog reading.  So I must apologise for not visiting you all and seeing what you've been up to lately.  I hope to rectify that this weekend!

So what have I been up to since my last post 2 weeks ago... can you believe it has been that long since I last posted!  Don't know where the time has gone too.

In my last stitching update I had almost completed 2 of the 4 monkeys for Wyatt A's quilt square.  Well, now all 4 have been stitched and the finished square has been sent to Quilts 4 Kids.

I have also managed to complete the whale square for Zachary L.  Zachary's theme is sea life (beach, water & sea creatures).  I found the perfect whale pattern on the Cyber Stitchers website.  Lots of grey stitches to do but this design stitched up reasonably quickly.  And no back stitch!  Bonus....

And now I have started the next one.... a cute little puppy for Jacob K.  His theme is Dogs and Puppies.  The design that I chose to stitch for Jacob is from a Debra Page chart booklet called "Playful Pups".  I started this one last night and hopefully will get it finished by the end of the weekend.  Fingers crossed.....  Will post a picture once I have stitched a bit more - nothing much to see at the moment!

Once I have stitched Jacob's puppy I have one more square to do for the Quilts 4 Kids project and then I will be able to catch up on some of my other stitching - such as my Margaret Sherry cats!  While I have been busily stitching the quilt squares I haven't had time to stitch anything on my three cats.  But I will get back on to them in the next couple of weeks or so.

Not only have I been busy stitching, but I have also been a bit naughty.....  I have added to my stash!  Not that it needed adding to but the items were on sale at the Fox Collection, and what could I do!!  I just had to have them....

Well, that's about it for this update.  We have some lovely rain today (at long last) so I am going to sit in front of the telly and watch a Midsomer Murders episode or a good movie and do some stitching!  Just for something different on a Sunday (not!).

Doesn't the quilt look fabulous.  If you go to the Quilts 4 Kids website you will see Anakin with his completed quilt.  Seeing Anakin with his finished quilt makes me feel really proud of what I stitched and I think seeing his smile makes it all worth doing....

Friday on my mind!

It's Friday..... I just love Friday....  Second best day of the week - mainly because I don't have to go to work on a Friday and that means that I get the whole day to blog and stitch....  and boy do I have a lot of blog reading and stitching to catch up on!  Best day of the week is Saturday as hubby is also home!

Today is a lovely day here in Sunny Perth, WA- in fact it is almost cold.... After having a run of 60 odd days without rain and being over 32 deg C (~90 deg F), we had rain yesterday (yippee - happy dance) and the temperature dropped dramatically.  I just had a look at the weather website and apparently down our way we had a low of 11.4 deg C overnight... no wonder I was cold during the night.  I had to get up and put on my fleecy PJ's, that's how cold I got.....  Of course snuggling up to hubby also helped, as did Felix when he decided to get on the bed at 4am for a purring cuddle!  Time to get the doona out of the cupboard...  Although we may still end up with one last hot spell near Easter, but I think we can safely say that Autumn has arrived - at long last!!!

More rain is due over the weekend and we will possibly have a wet Monday - which normally I would hate but I am going to grin and bear it as we so desparately need the rain!

Okay, so now for the latest stitching update.  As promised below is a pic of the monkeys that I am currently stitching for Quilts 4 Kids.  This square is for Wyatt A.  Wyatt's theme is Monkeys....

I decided to split the square in 4 and stitch some little motifs in each square.  So far I have completed 1 and nearly done the second - just the backstitch to go.  Then onto the next one....  Have to get a wriggle on as it is due next Friday!  Still the next 2 are quite small so shouldn't take long, even for the world's slowest stitcher (Me!).

Totally Useless SAL update - New Moon 3 April 2011

Here we are again - another new moon today.  I can't believe how quickly 2011 is flying by...

The ORT's have been multiplying away quite happily this last month.  I have actually had to push them down in the jar - maybe I had better find a bigger jar soon!

This month the ORT's are made up of the last of the butterfly that I stitched for Quilts 4 Kids, a bit of my Margaret Sherry cat that I must finish.... and Eeyore and Friends which I stitched for Quilts 4 Kids, and the browns of the monkeys that I have just started.  So quite a variety of colours with the blue of Eeyore starting to disappear under the brown of the monkeys!

Will post a monkey update in the next couple of days....

This new moon finds my ORT's playing with the snow globe that hubby bought back from Sydney for me.  Unfortunately I didn't get to go this time but maybe next time ORT's and I will be able to tag along on his junket!!  I wonder where my ORT's will want to have their picture taken next month??

Eeyore and Friends was finished on 30 March 2011.  I just need to wash and press it and then pop it in the mail to Quilts 4 Kids to be added to the quilt of Alexis W.  I really enjoyed stitching this and it was actually quite a quick stitch - especially after the very long "Wings" one....  Would quite happily to do this one again!

Wings and a play!

I know, it should be "on a wing and prayer".... but in this instance I am talking about "Wings" and a kitten playing!

I finally finished "Wings" yesterday - yipee!  This design did take a little bit longer to stitch than I had hoped - not all down to my slow stitching.  The issue with this pattern, which I didn't notice til I started stitching, was the original printing of the pattern.  The detail in the design didn't always match the symbol legend so it did take some nutting out in places to get the colours right, and even then I'm not sure if they were right!

I also modified the design slightly by adding the little butterfly on the left and changing around the flowers.  I also didn't stitch all the flowers as doing so would have made the design too big for the specified square dimensions.

Overall I am quite pleased with the result.  Now I just need to wash and press it, and then pop it in the mail to the Quilts 4 Kids team.

I have had a look at some of the other squares that have been received so far for Sarah I - her quilt is going to be really lovely when it's finished with all the colourful butterfly squares.  All squares are due by the end of March so I will have to keep checking back on her pages to see what else arrives for her.

I also managed to spend a couple of hours on my February MS cat last night - I will now finish him off either today or tomorrow and then it is onto the next quilt square for Quilts 4 Kids.  I will be stitching Winnie the Pooh for Alexis W.  Quite looking forward to stitching a Pooh design.

Ok, so where is the kitten playing...  I have finally managed to get a photo of Felix playing before he spotted the camera and took off!  While I was sitting in the study this morning he came in and started playing with the cord from the venetian blind and was jumping around on the window sill trying to chase the leaves that were blowing around by the front door.  He was having such a lovely time amusing himself until he saw me take his photo and then he was out of here!  Oh well.....

Quick Finish and Stitching Update

Just a thought I'd do a quick post for this afternoon.... however nothing is ever quick when I get on Blogger!  As you will see I have been playing around with my background / blog template.... not sure if I will keep this one yet as it feels a bit too pink for me!!!  But it makes a nice change - and they do say that "variety is the spice of life" and it's probably time to spice up my blog!

So what have I been doing stitching-wise lately.  Well, mainly I have been stitching the butterfly that I chose to stitch for Quilts 4 Kids - Sarah I's butterfly quilt.  This has been quite a nice design to stitch albeit a bit tricky as the design is a very old DMC freebie pattern and looks to be hand drawn / coloured so the squares don't necessarily match the code at the bottom.  So in some places I have had to stitch what I feel is right.  Hopefully it will look very bright and cheerful when it's finished.

I did manage to have a little finish the other day.  Mark had to go into the city for a couple of appointments and I went with him and took some stitching with me to while away the time.  I was stitching the freebie "Country Diary Card" from the World of Cross Stitching (issue 167) - started it ages ago and put it aside to do other things.  So I thought seeing as it only had a bit of backstitch and the dreaded french knots to go I should make the effort to finish it - which I did!  Not sure what I will do with it yet - the freebie kit did come with it's own mounting card so I might use that or do something completely diffferent with it.  In the meantime it will go into the folder where all these little things go until I need them again!!

This week I need to start on my "MSherry Lovers" blog SAL cat so that I can at least say that I have started the February cat....  WIP photo will follow at a later stage.  I already have an idea of how to finish the cat but that can't be revealed until May when we have all finished our cats.  Can't wait to see what everyone is going to do with their cats!

That's it for this lovely overcast and cool Sunday afternoon.  It's time to say goodbye so that I can go and sit in front of the telly and watch the Western Force's first game of the 2011 season, and stitch some more of the butterfly!

Two does go into one!

Well, this is a first - I have had two finishes in one day!  Never before have I managed to do this....  don't think it will ever happen again either!

Firstly, I have finished Thomas the Tank Engine.  I stitched Thomas for the Australian Quilts 4 Kids organisation.  I started him on 27 December 2010 and put in the last bit of the backstitch today.  I even totalled up the hours I took to stitch him - 30 hours all up (give or take 1/2 an hour).  I will now wash and press him and mail him off to the Quilts 4 Kids organiser during the next few days.

This square is due on 28 February, so I am way ahead of schedule so far!  Just as well too as I have quite a bit of stitching to do in the next month....

The second finish of the day is a little cat fridge magnet but as it is a birthday exchange gift for someone in the UK I can't show you a photo until it arrives there safely along with the birthday card that I now have to start stitching.  This exchange is due in the UK on 3 February.  Not much time to stitch and send but the card I have chosen shouldn't take long to stitch (I hope!)

Once I have done that exchange, I need to get onto the stitching for the Valentine's exchange that Parsley has organised.  I have my swap person's name but I'm not giving you any hints as to where this exchange is being sent or what I am doing - you will just have to wait until February 14th!

After stitching the Valentine's exchange, I then need to start on another square for Quilts 4 Kids.  This one will be the butterfly design for little Sarah I.  That square is due on 30 March.

Then it will be the Winnie the Pooh square for Alexis W which is due 15 April.

If I get a good head start on these two I might sign up for a fourth square but I suspect that really would be biting off more than I can chew or I should say stitch....

And, I have also signed up to do a Biscornu exchange for the end of February - although I am still waiting to hear if that is going ahead or not.  I have never done a Biscornu so I am quite looking forward to doing this... I hear that they are addictive though!  Oh, well what's another harmeless addiction to add to my other addictions - cross stitch, blogging, cross stitch forums, exchanges... the list goes on!

Of course, I still have to find time to finish off the "Edwardian Country Lady's Diary" that I started in November last year, and I also need to put the needle back into Bonsai and Buddha.  Buddha is feeling very neglected!

As I have mentioned before I always work better with a deadline, and it appears to apply to my stitching as well as my job!  Stitching goals are just as important as any other goals....



Oh, and before I go - have a look at Felix with his "Precious".  This is a little blue toy mouse that he plays with.  He has been walking around the house with this in his mouth over the last couple of days and meowing like he has caught a real mouse!  He then took it outside into their enclosure yesterday morning and wouldn't let Oscar anywhere near it!  My Precious!!  (and yes, he did bring it back inside so that it was safe and sound and no other pussy cats could steal it)

Thomas the Tank Engine update

As I mentioned in a previous post I have signed up to stitch some quilt squares for the Quilts 4 Kids charity.  The first square is due to be completed and sent by 28 February 2011, so I thought I better get my skates on and use the week that I have off from work to get started on Anakin's square.

I have chosen to do a Thomas the Tank Engine design as his theme was Trains.  This simple design was originally published in the Cross Stitcher magazine in 2002 and I had kept the design filed away in my stash of charts.

I started stitching Thomas on 27th December.  So far I have managed to get around 2-3 hours per day on him so he is progressing quite nicely.  (Although today I haven't as yet picked up a needle and stitched a single stitch!)

Now I must admit that I am reasonably particular about my back side as I always want it to look the best it can be but every now and then it doesn't hurt to be a little less particular - or is that peculiar!!!

So now that I have shown you Thomas' front side and his back side, I will post this little update and go and stitch on him some more.

Next update will probably coincide with my TUSAL post as it is almost new moon time!
